Social media has become one of the prime channels for brand communication in this era of digital transformation. It offers a slew of opportunities, from awareness to engagement. However, the one key aspect that is often overlooked is accessibility. Making your brand’s social media accessible is much more than about abiding by guidelines; it is all about creating an inclusive space for one and all, irrespective of their abilities. Here, we learn from this article how making your brand’s social media accessible brings long-term branding benefits.

Why accessibility matters

Accessibility in social media is all about making sure that all users – including those with disabilities – can fully engage with your content. With over 1 billion people in the world living with some kind of disability, not taking their needs into consideration can very well alienate a good chunk of your audience. This is beyond the right thing to do; it is also a good business sense. By making your social media more accessible, you enhance your engagement, establish brand loyalty among customers, and expand your reach.

Given that the rate of internet usage is increasing day by day in Nigeria, creating an inclusive virtual space can as well make your brand feel more considerate and updated. All this will also help you make sure not to shut doors on anybody by not having accommodations to meet the different types of needs. For example, most users in Nigeria use low-end smartphones or have slower connections; hence, technical aspects of accessibility, such as mobile optimization and loading times, go a long way.

Key areas of social media accessibility

Visual content: Alt text and descriptions

Images are at the core of most social media platforms, hence they pose one of the major barriers to visually impaired people who work with screen readers. The addition of alt text into images is one of the easiest and most effective ways to make your content accessible. Alt text should briefly describe the focus of an image, explaining the important details.

Also, for complicated infographics and charts, give a full description either in the post or link to the web page with the full explanation. That just makes your content inclusive for those users that cannot view it visually.

Video accessibility: subtitles and transcriptions

Video content is on the rise, but it should remember users who can’t hear or hear poorly. This is the reason every video should include either subtitles or a closed caption track. Not only does this allow people who might have issues with hearing to use your videos effectively, but also it accommodates users who may be in a loud environment or simply don’t like any noise when viewing videos.

Another way to make things more accessible is to provide full transcriptions for videos or audio, as in the case of podcasts. This way, people unable to access the audio will still be able to grasp the content.

Text: readability and font size

The design counts: use easily readable fonts, and avoid too ornamental or complicated typography, which may be inaccessible for users with poor eyesight. Use big font sizes and proper spacing. Make your text easily readable on platforms that support text formatting, like Instagram Stories or LinkedIn articles.

Colour contrast is also critical for readability. Ensure that the text is in good contrasting condition with the background colour to facilitate easy reading by colour-blind or low-vision users. There are many online tools available that can help you test for appropriate colour contrast.

Optimising social media for mobile accessibility

You might have guessed it, especially with Nigeria being a mobile-first country; the optimization of your brand’s social media for mobile access is important. Here’s how you can do this:

Responsive design

Scalability of images, text, and videos should be proper and easily interacted with on mobile devices. Users on mobile should not have to zoom in or zoom out to engage with your content.

Tapping Targets: Allow buttons, links, and icons to be large enough and have enough spacing so their target areas can be tapped easily. This is especially true when the users have motor impairments and thus use assistive devices to tap targets, such as styluses.

Load times

For users in countries with poor Internet connectivity, or users with little mobile data, content that loads slowly might as well not load at all. Optimise images, video and other multimedia for faster load times. Tools like file compression for image files can help.

Plain language writing

It’s not just about the technical changes, but also about how it’s communicated. This is where making your posts more accessible by using simple, clear language, which can easily be understood by a larger audience, comes in. Avoid using jargon or complicated words and break down any complex ideas or instructions into more digestible chunks.

Engaging with assistive technologies

Many people of differing abilities use assistive technologies to access the internet, such as screen readers or voice recognition software. Here are a few steps you might take to make your social media more compatible with those tools:

Use proper headings

If a platform-like LinkedIn or Medium-allows longer post formatting, use headings to provide structure to your content. It allows screen readers to better navigate the text.

Hashtag accessibility

Hashtags are many times crucial for a social media approach but for screen readers, they can be hard to decipher. By capitalising the first letter of each word in a hashtag, it can be easier to make out such as #AccessibleSocialMedia instead of #accessiblesocialmedia.

Interactive elements

While designing polls, quizzes, or any other interactive elements, ensure that they are keyboard-navigable. Many individuals with various disabilities are unable to use mice and rely on keyboard navigation to move around online content.

How accessible social media helps your brand

Wider reach

By making your social media more accessible, you open up your brand to a much wider audience. Not only does this include people with disabilities, but also users who might have temporary limitations-e.g., a broken arm or poor internet connectivity.

Increased engagement

More accessible content is more engaging; a brand that ensures it levels the playground for everyone to have fun with its content-that, in essence, might be a sweet treat leading to lots of interest in the form of likes, shares, and comments.

Positive brand image

Demonstrating a commitment to accessibility can enhance your brand’s reputation for inclusive and social responsibility. People are more likely to support a brand sensitive to different needs and working to be inclusive in its communications.

SEO benefits

Accessible content also tends to rank well in search. Adding alt text to your images, readable text, and enhancement of mobile accessibility are just a few ways you can make your social media content more accessible.

The process of making your brand’s social media accessible is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes business sense. It facilitates inclusion, widens your reach, and bolsters the image of your brand. By adding simple changes like alt text to images, captioning of videos, optimization for mobile use, and clarity of language, you actually make a huge difference in its accessibility. By implementing these practices, it will not only show that your brand is in line with accessibility standards; it will also be seen as an eventual leader in inclusivity.
