In today’s fast world, it becomes hard for consumers to make decisions. There are just so many options available for a customer to make the right choice that will serve their interest. Helping customers to make a decision as a business will not only improve experience but will also gain trust and loyalty. Here are 6 ways to help your customers make decisions.

Simplify choices

Probably the most potent way to empower customers to make a choice is by simplifying the choices presented to them. Too many choices may paralyse the customer’s ability to decide—where the customer becomes overwhelmed and might not be able to choose anything at all. Instead, curate your offerings—products or services—by grouping them into very distinct, clear categories. For example, if you are selling smartphones, you can organise them by budget, performance, or features and hence drive the customer toward a more informed and focused choice.

Add a limited number of high quality options to make choice easier. Best sellers or top picks may help guide customers toward more popular and higher rated products. This will alleviate the cognitive load on the customer and ensure he is likely to buy something.

Offer comparative information

Evidently, customers need more than just a feature list to make their decision; they want to see the different options in a side-by-side comparison. Comparison charts and side-by-side comparisons are quite effective at detailing the product offerings. A comparison chart gives customers an overview of the differences and similarities between options, thus letting them take the most appropriate decision.

For instance, suppose you are in an e-commerce business selling electronics; you would give them a comparison chart that outlines specifications, prices, and customer reviews of similar products. This helps them weigh their options better. The bottom line is to concisely give the customer this information, without overwhelming them, but empowering them to make a choice that best fits their needs.

Social proof

Social proof is key to effective decision-making. When customers see others experiencing positive results from a product or service, they are most sure about buying it. This includes customer reviews, testimonials, case studies, and can even be in the form of user-generated content.

Reviews and ratings of the product can be placed at the very top of the page with testimonials in order to provide reassurance to the buyer. Clearly mentioning the number of people who have purchased the product or the number of high ratings in that regard can further add validity to their decision. From an African perspective, word-of-mouth and recommendations from the community go a long way, so social proof can be quite compelling.

Guide through expertise

Positioning your brand or business as an industry expert has a great influence on customers’ decision-making. This you can do by simply producing educational content like blog posts, how-to guides, and webinars. When customers feel that you are knowledgeable, they will turn to you when making decisions.

For example, if it is a skincare brand, then giving educational content on the various types of skin and which products most suit them empowers the customers with an assurance that they are making the right buying decisions. This doesn’t only help the customer but also makes your brand a trusted adviser in lieu of a seller.

Incentivize the decision

Sometimes, that small push is required. Incentives in the form of discounts, time-limited offers, or free trials can give them that final push toward the commitment of an action. It builds a feeling of urgency and sometimes tips the scale to buy.

For example, a limited-time reduction in the price for one of your popular products or a buy-one-get-one-free deal can get them to decide faster. However, it’s important not to overuse these tactics to avoid creating a perception of your brand always being on sale. What you want to do is create that genuine feeling of missing out on something in case they fail to commit.

Personalise the experience

This will help the customer make decisions that ‘feel’ right to them. Such will involve the use of customer data, including past purchases and history regarding preference toward certain things. Recommendations tailed into personal experiences make the customer feel understood and valued—something that plays a very great role in one’s decision-making process.

For example, if your customer has purchased athletic wear in your store before, then recommendations of complementary products, such as sneakers or workout accessories, can guide him toward making a decision that would pertain to his interest. Even in the domain of communication itself, sending personalised emails or messages with personalised product recommendations is very productive in driving decisions.

Help your customers in their decisions—understand their needs and provide the right tools and information to help guide them. Making the choices simple, giving comparative information, social proof, guiding through expertise, incentivizing decisions, creating personalization—these would be the ways to create a seamless decision-making process for customers that will not only benefit them but will also help in bringing success to the business.

These thoughtful approaches will change the customer journey to be seamless, enjoyable, and less stressful. You want, after all, to enable them to make confident decisions that bring satisfaction and loyalty in the end.
